3M™ Hollow Glass Microspheres – iM16K

High-Strength Lightweight Microspheres for Construction Grouts, Repair Mortars & Protective Coatings

3M™ Hollow Glass Microspheres – Grade iM16K are ultra-high crush strength hollow glass microspheres engineered for applications demanding maximum strength retention with significant weight reduction. With a 16,000 psi crush strength (90% survival), iM16K is designed for structural and semi-structural construction systems where conventional lightweight fillers fail under load.

In construction applications, iM16K enables the development of lightweight, durable cementitious and polymer-modified materials—including non-shrink grouts, repair mortars, overlay systems, precast components, and protective coatings—while improving application efficiency and supporting thermal performance through its air-filled microstructure.

Benefits in Construction Systems

Maximum strength retention with weight reduction

iM16K’s high crush strength supports structural performance while significantly lowering density.

Dead-load reduction

Reduces the weight of grouts, mortars, and overlays—especially important for renovation and precast handling.

Improved flow and placement

Spherical particles enhance rheology, pumpability, and finishing.

Thermal insulation support

Air-filled microspheres reduce thermal conductivity and help improve thermal efficiency.

Reduced shrinkage stress

Lower density systems can reduce internal stress build-up and help limit cracking tendency.

Durability in harsh environments

Inorganic glass chemistry offers excellent stability against moisture and chemicals.

Recommended Dosage Guidelines

Optimize dosage based on target density, compressive strength, and workability.

High-Strength Lightweight Grouts

1 –5% replacement of conventional fillers/aggregates (by volume)
Balances flowability, density reduction, and compressive performance.

Repair Mortars & Polymer-Modified Systems

1 – 4% by volume of total dry mix (or aggregate replacement)
Helps reduce weight and improve application efficiency.

Lightweight Overlays / Screeds / Toppings

1 – 2% aggregate replacement (by volume)
Used to reduce dead load and improve thermal performance.

Protective Coatings (Epoxy / PU High-Build)

1 – 5% by volume of the coating formulation
Reduces density and improves barrier efficiency with improved spray/flow behavior.

Application Notes

Add iM16K during filler incorporation using low-to-moderate shear to minimize microsphere breakage.

In cementitious systems, blend with dry powders first for uniform distribution.

Always validate compressive strength, adhesion, abrasion resistance, and thermal performance as per project specification.

Safety & Handling

Inorganic, non-toxic, and non-hazardous

Avoid dust generation during handling

Use gloves, goggles, and dust masks when handling dry material

Refer to SDS for complete safety information.

Storage

Store in a dry, covered area

Protect from moisture and mechanical compression

Reseal bags after opening to maintain flowability
