FOAMSTAB 8850

VOC-Free Let-Down Defoamer for Water-Based Decorative Coatings (Hydrophobic Silica + Mineral Oil)

Water-based paints and decorative coatings commonly generate foam during dispersion, let-down, pumping, tinting, and filling. Entrained air and microfoam can lead to application defects such as pinholes, craters, reduced gloss, poor leveling, and inconsistent film thickness. Foam also reduces manufacturing efficiency by causing overflow, volume inaccuracies, and longer de-aeration times.

FOAMSTAB 8850 is a VOC-free, general-purpose let-down defoamer engineered to control foam across a broad range of latex systems. Its hydrophobic silica and mineral oil chemistry provides rapid foam knockdown and helps control foam re-generation during both production and application.

FOAMSTAB 8850 can be added in the grind or in the let-down stage, provided adequate shear is used for uniform dispersion. With optimized dosage and proper incorporation, it supports smoother processing and cleaner, more uniform films—improving overall coating quality and productivity.

Benefits

VOC-free defoamer option for modern low-VOC paint systems

Helps reduce macrofoam and microfoam for smoother, cleaner films

General-purpose performance across a broad range of latex systems

Flexible addition point: grind or let-down

Improves process efficiency by reducing foam-related stoppages and de-aeration time

Supports improved appearance: better leveling, gloss consistency, and fewer foam defects (when properly dispersed)

Comparison with Silicone Defoamers

FOAMSTAB 8850 (Hydrophobic Silica + Mineral Oil)

Often preferred for decorative water-borne coatings where balanced foam control and broad latex compatibility are needed
Typically offers reliable deaeration with a lower tendency to create silicone-linked recoat or surface sensitivity in many paint systems
Requires correct dispersion and dosage optimization to achieve best defect-free performance

Silicone Defoamers

Can deliver very strong foam knockdown at low dosages, especially in severe foaming
In some decorative systems, silicones may increase risk of surface defects (craters/fisheyes) or intercoat sensitivity if not correctly selected
Usually needs careful matching to the formulation and application method

Selection tip: Choose FOAMSTAB 8850 for broad, dependable foam control in water-based decorative/latex systems. Consider silicone defoamers when maximum foam knockdown is required and compatibility is proven through trials.

Safety & Hazard Information

Store in covered warehouse

Seal cap after using it.

Storage & Handling Guidelines

General Storage Conditions

Store FOAMSTAB 520 in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Keep containers tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination and solvent loss.
Avoid storing near sparks, open flames, or ignition sources, as the product contains a low-flash hydrocarbon solvent.

Temperature Considerations

If stored below 0 °C, the product may exhibit slight turbidity or separation.
To restore full uniformity, warm gently to approx. 40 °C and stir well before use.
Do not expose sealed containers to temperatures above 45–50 °C to prevent pressure build-up.

Handling Precautions

Ensure adequate ventilation during use to avoid inhalation of vapors.
Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, goggles, and protective clothing.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product.
Avoid splashing or high-speed addition to prevent localized over-foaming or crater formation.

Container Handling

Use only the original, properly labeled containers supplied by the manufacturer.
Ensure drums and containers are always grounded and bonded during transfer to prevent static discharge.
Use pump or controlled pour methods—avoid rough handling or dropping containers.

Compatibility & Stability

Keep away from strong oxidizing agents, acids, and alkalis.
FOAMSTAB 520 remains stable for at least 12 months under recommended storage conditions.
Re-homogenize gently if stored for a long time.

Spill & Leak Guidelines

In case of small spills, absorb with inert absorbents like sand or universal absorbent.
Collect the absorbed material into suitable containers for disposal as per local regulations.
Avoid letting the product enter drains, soil, or natural water bodies.

Fire Safety Measures

Keep suitable extinguishing media nearby: foam, CO₂, dry powder, or water spray.
Ensure fire protection systems are in place for storage areas containing flammable liquids.

Regulatory & Safety Notes

FOAMSTAB 520 is an industrial-grade additive and must not be used in food-contact applications.
Follow all applicable local safety, environmental, and storage regulations.
